This saying is often attributed to John Lennon and is in the lyrics of his song “Beautiful Boy” which he wrote for his son (with Yoko), Sean.
The song ends with a whispered “good night” similar to the ending of the song “Good Night” which he had written for his son (with Cynthia), Julian.
John Lennon largely removed himself from his musical career from 1975 to be a full-time father for Sean.
His last album “Double Fantasy” included the song “Beautiful Boy, (Darling Boy)”
The start of the song is of John settling his son after a bad dream….
“Close your eyes,
Have no fear,
The monsters gone,
He’s on the run and your Daddy’s here”
and continues with some advice for his son….
“Before you cross the street,
take my hand,
Life is just what happens to you
while you are busy making other plans”
Also in the lyrics of the song, sadly, John Lennon sings
“I can hardly wait
to see you come of age”
although it was not to be, as John Lennon was murdered in 1980, shot by Mark David Chapman outside John’s home in New York.
Although John Lennon has been widely attributed with this saying, it was quoted elsewhere prior to his use in the song.
The earliest quote according to “The Yale Book of Quotations” by Fred Shapiro is attributed to writer Allen Saunder, and it was also printed in the “Readers Digest” Quotable Quotes in 1957 “Life is what happens to us while we are busy making other plans”.
